  • The struggle for climate justice and the Degrowth of Aviation – experiences from the Stay Grounded Network
    Fecha: Viernes, Enero 29, 2021 - 18:00 UTC
    Duración: 120 min
    Breve descripción:

Stay Grounded (SG) is a global network with more than 160 member-organisations on all continents fighting for a climate just mobility system and for a degrowth of aviation. While Covid19 grounded most flights in 2020 and the aviation industry received billions of unconditional bailouts, the question of which flights are necessary and how to foster a just transition of the sector to #savepeoplenotplanes has become even more urgent. In this workshop, we will present the Stay Grounded Network and its proposals for a climate just transportation system and discuss why aviation is extremely problematic when it comes to climate and social justice. SG member ATERRA from Portugal will shed a light on the link between aviation (growth), the problems of mass tourism and the local impact of airport expansions. Tara Burke from MTST (houseless workers movement) will give an input on the first steps that have been made to expand the network to Latin America and explain the support that is offered by the network.
Together with the participants we will explore the idea of a just transition in the aviation industry and related sectors and hopefully collect a diversity of thoughts and opinions from different areas of the world facing the problem of aviation and its local and global impacts.
